KUNYE FOUNDATION

Education has the power to bring about profound change
Now, more than ever, we need to realize the transformational potential of education.
Every child has the right to quality education.
Our Mission

The Kunye Foundation believes that every child deserves access to a quality education—one that extends beyond reading and writing — no matter their circumstances. We provide financial assistance to primary school pupils in need, helping to open doors to quality education that nurtures not just the mind, but the heart.
We believe in education that teaches kindness, integrity, and perseverance — values that build strong children and, in turn, strong communities. Now, more than ever, our towns, cities, and country need young people who will grow into ethical, caring leaders. Great leaders are not born; they are nurtured. Schools that instil strong values create a ripple effect that strengthens the communities they serve.
By coming together to raise funds and offer financial support, the Kunye Foundation and its supporters help plant the seeds of hope, opportunity, and leadership for the future.

About the Kunye Foundation
Creating Lasting Impact
The Xhosa word “kunye” means “together.” It reflects unity, compassion, and the power of community — values that lie at the heart of everything we do.
The Kunye Foundation is a registered public benefit organisation and SARS-approved Section 18A non-profit company (Registration No. 2024/777403/08). Our mission is to provide financial support to primary school children whose families are facing financial hardship or marginalisation. We assist with school fees, supplies, and uniforms, helping children access quality education so they can fulfil their potential and thrive.
Llandudno Primary School is a small public school with an outsized impact. Its numeracy and literacy results rank in the top 10% of schools in the Western Cape, often outperforming larger and better-resourced schools. But what truly sets Llandudno apart is its commitment to nurturing the whole child. Learners leave Grade 7 with confidence, kindness, resilience, and integrity — ready to take on life with a strong sense of self and purpose.
The school’s motto, “Be the best you can be,” inspires a culture rooted in integrity, kindness, positivity, and bravery. It’s a place where children learn not only to excel academically, but to care deeply — about themselves, their peers, and the world around them.
The Foundation was established in loving memory of Ethan Mattison, a past pupil who passed away at age 17 in a tragic accident. His loss was deeply felt by all who knew him. But his light, his kindness — that stayed. And it lives on. The Foundation honours his life and carries forward his spirit of generosity and compassion.

Fundraising Aims
Sustainable funding
The Foundation’s long-term fundraising efforts are focused on building an endowment fund designed to generate sustainable annual returns for ongoing financial support. Our vision is to fund at least two children in each grade every year. While it will take time to establish the necessary capital base, donors may choose to contribute either to the endowment fund or to the current fund. The endowment fund will begin providing assistance once a capital base of R4 million has been achieved, while donations to the current fund will be directed toward immediate support for learners in need.
Beneficiaries of the Foundation
Identifying Needs
The Foundation was established to provide financial support to learners at Llandudno Primary School, opening doors to quality education for children who might otherwise be excluded. In alignment with our commitment to equity and inclusion, at least 75% of beneficiaries will be South African children of colour.
The Foundation will screen and evaluate applicants to determine their eligibility for financial assistance. By understanding the specific needs of each learner and their family, support can be tailored to provide the most effective aid and ensure that no child is left behind.
Financial Support
Providing Assistance
Our financial support programs offer direct assistance to primary school learners who require support with school fees and related expenses. By offering financial assistance, we aim to remove barriers to education and enable primary school learners to build the solid foundation required to the pursue their longer-term academic goals.
Community Support
Building Connections
We believe in the power of community support to drive positive change. Through collaboration with past pupils and philanthropists, we can create a network of support that enriches the educational journey of less privileged learners, fostering a community that values education and empowers future generations.
What if....

-
What if every child had access to quality education in Grades R to Grade 3 that enabled them to build solid numeracy and literacy skills...
-
What if every Grade 4 learner was able to read for comprehension...
-
What if every Grade 7 learner had mastered the basics of mathematics...
-
What if every South African school-leaver was employable...
-
What if every adult had the dignity of paid employment that enabled them to provide food and shelter for themselves and their families...
-
What if you could help make this a reality?

Research has shown that a 10% increase in the numeracy skills of every 15-year-old can result in a 25-40% increase in GDP per capita over their lifetime. (Global Business Coalition for Education https://shorturl.at/Pa2jk ).

What inspired the Kunye Foundation?

Parents of children at Llandudno Primary School recognise that this small government school has an outsize ability to impact the lives of the pupils who are fortunate enough to attend it. Llandudno’s numeracy and literacy are in the top 10% of schools in the Western Cape, frequently outperforming bigger, wealthier schools.
It’s not just academics that count – Llandudno has a reputation for nurturing young children so that they leave Grade 7 with solid self-esteem, a ‘can do’ attitude and are confident, caring individuals with strong personal integrity. The quality of the education is well known and pupils from Llandudno have no difficulty getting into the high school of their choice.
Over the years, parents and teachers have regularly asked; “What if every child in South Africa had the opportunity to attend a school like Llandudno Primary?” The economic realities of South Africa put the relatively modest school fees out of reach of most families in Hout Bay. As a result, the demographic mix of pupils at the school doesn’t represent the community we live.
In 2023, a group of parents decided it was time to take action. The “Better Together” fund was started to raise funds to provide financial assistance to pupils who would otherwise not be able to attend the school. This fund was the forerunner of the Foundation.

Governance structure
Strong governance is essential to building sustainable impact. The Kunye Foundation is led by a board of volunteer non-executive directors who meet regularly to guide projects, manage resources, and ensure the Foundation stays true to its mission.
The Board — John O’Callaghan, Neill Hellman, Sandy Mattison, Karin Neill, and former Principal Denise Erasmus — brings deep community insight and experience. Each director serves with integrity, care, and a commitment to the Foundation’s long-term purpose and accountability.
